“There are no shortcuts to an amazing painting”
Judy Curnow
I’ve been painting since I was young, and although I’m predominantly self-taught, my artistic journey was forever transformed in 2009 when I met New Zealand’s renowned landscape artist, Tim Wilson. Tim - who was known as the “master of light” - offered to mentor me, an experience that elevated my work to a whole new level.
The incredible years I spent learning from him gave me the foundation to develop my own style and led to my paintings being featured in his exclusive gallery in Queenstown. The amazing years spent with Tim enabled her paintings to get to the level where they were featured in his own exclusive gallery in Queenstown.
My style sits between impressionism and fauvism, where I enhance the colours and tones of the natural world. Working in oil, I often use impasto and wet-on-wet techniques. My paintings are easily recognised for their play with light and texture-characterised by bold colours, expressive brushwork, and semi-non-naturalistic depictions.
Light, and its ever-changing effects, has always fascinated me. Each layer of paint I apply is glazed to create unparalleled depth and definition, built up through small, adjacent brushstrokes in complementary hues. The result is a canvas that feels alive, capturing a moment that continues to shift as you look at it.
As my work has grown, so too has my artistic profile. My paintings are now highly sought after in New Zealand and overseas. Every piece I create is a one-off, crafted with the highest-quality oil pigments on handmade berge linen canvases—materials chosen to ensure that each painting is both enduring and unique.
